Thanks for sharing your story, Susan. Taking NSAIDs for long period of time is very risky and what happened to you is a case in point. But it's unfortunate that you found that out the hard way.

I hope you'll get back on your "feet", physically, mentally and financially, soon.

I have been taking generic "Cataflam" 50 mg twice a day for around 6 years. I owned a restaurant and the cemet floors for 10+ hours a day was causing feet pain and swelling. Just over a year ago I developed an awful stomach ache and took more cataflam for the pain. What I didn't know was the pain was a 1&1/2 hole being eat away in my intestines.
I ended up with a bag on my side to catch my waste while recovering from emergency surgery. Yes, I came very close to death. After three months I had surgery to put me back together and I no longer have the bag. However I developed a serious staff (sp?) infection and after 3 additional surgeries and nearly dying again I finally recovered a year later.
Well, I was still taking cataflam until two days ago when I decided to research it. I was shocked to see the hole in my intestines was a major side effect!
Two weeks ago the throwing up and stomach pains returned. Now I'm worried that cataflam has done it to me again!
Other than the problem being on my feet all day on cement I've lived a very healthy life. I haven't so much as had an ear infection in my entire life. I rarely get a cold. Never had surgery before last year when I had 5!
In my opinion this stuff is not worth the risk. 50 years of good health gone thanks to this "legal" drug. Of course theres the over $17,000 out of pocket cost my insurance didn't pay, the loss of income, and higher insurance rates now. But its my health I miss the most. I'm just not as strong as before all this. Its changed mine and my families lives forever.

Hi Brian, I'm sorry to hear what you've gone through. I've experienced adverse effects of NSAID before so I know it's definitely not something one enjoys going through. Unfortunately, I've no idea when it'll take your body to return back to the point before you took Arthrotec. Every individual is unique; some people (such as I) recover after a few hours, but some took longer. I'm afraid only time will tell. Meanwhile, it is worthwhile to give your body adequate rest, water, exercise and nutrients in the form of fresh foods to support its recovery as much as you can. I wish you all the best.

I was prescribed Arthrotec over a month ago. I took 4 tablets amounting to 200 mg. (over two days) and then I went into anaphylactic shock. I experienced severe swelling in my hands, feet, face, arms, legs, thighs. I also felt like my chest was too small for my lungs, but I had no swelling of the throats, but my breathing got laboured. I experienced a sharp spike in blood pressure. The doctors attributed that to fear. I have been into the hospital (emerg) twice, 6 days apart. It has now been 4 weeks since this incident. (yes, the pills were destroyed) and even now if I stop taking antihistamines I experience a return of the swelling in my arms, and hands. What really worries me is if I will ever be able to stop taking the antihistamines. Just how long does the body take to purge this toxin?
