10 Funny Movies to Brighten Your Day
Keep your blood vessels clear and heart pumping strong with none other than, your own laughter
Can’t to a gym? Try making up by watching a funny movie. Research has found that repetitive mirthful laughter induces bodily responses that are similar to what you would get from moderate physical exercise. That means laughing makes you feel better, cuts your stress levels, boosts your immune system, lowers bad cholesterol and blood pressure, and raises good cholesterol. All without any side effects! Isn’t that amazing?
So, if a spate of bad news have been making you depressed, helpless or frustrated lately, curl up on the couch with some of these classic funny movies, out of which one will surely brighten your day:
1. The First Wives Club
-
Watching 3 rich and brilliant tai-tais (a Cantonese term used to describe wealthy stay-at-home wife who spend obscene amount of time and money on leisure activities) getting back on their ex-husbands never fail to entertain me. Probably because in real life, such revenge, if it ever happens, will never be as dramatic and fun-ny as what Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton had made it out to be. Pure 105 minutes of entertainment!
2. Forrest Gump
-
This list will be incomplete without this funny and heartwarming epic by Tom Hanks. But it’s actually more than a comedy. The naive but goodhearted character played by Hanks rekindles love and hope in the audience so effortlessly while making you laugh at his tell-it-as-it-is lines and seemingly socially inept behaviors. A classic that is worth watching again and again.
3. When Harry Met Sally
-
A classic romantic comedy that explores the relationship between two long-time friends. The funny dialogues, a storyline that tugs at your heart string, the excellent music and the magical chemistry between Meg Ryan and Bill Crystal will have you laugh and cry with the lead characters. One of the best romantic comedies ever made.
4. Shaolin Soccer
-
When you combine two unlikely elements in a movie, you either get something that’s awkward and a pain to look at, or you get something that’s totally unexpected and creative. I think this movie, which applied kung fu imaginatively to football with no holds barred, has achieved the latter. Although the bulk of the computer-generated stunts are totally unbelievable, they turned out to be the main thing that made this movie so mind-blowingly funny. If only World Cup is this entertaining!
5. Kung Fu Hustle
-
If you like the visual treats in Shaolin Soccer, be prepared to indulge in more stunning special effects in Kung Fu Hustle like razor sharp music waves and other earth shattering moves. Plenty of funny gravity-defying CG-actions that will keep you glued till the end.
6. Happy Feet
-
This kid-friendly comedy (can’t say the same for the others) is one of the animated movies that never fails to put a smile on my face. More than a smile in fact. Realistic landscapes, detailed depictions of emperor penguins, slick animations, funny dialogues and wonderful music all made this penguin tale a timeless enjoyment for one and all.
7. Big Business
-
Having watched this movie many years ago with my secondary school classmates, I can still recall the great fun I’ve had in the cinema. I laughed so hard on that day that I couldn’t get up straight at the end of it. See Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin play two identical twins who got separated at birth, reunite many years later and get entangled in a corporate power struggle. As the description on the DVD has aptly put, this is ‘a wildly hilarious, classic case of mistaken identities, split personalities, and double trouble!’
8. The Addams Family
-
This delightful adaptation of the cartoon characters by Charles Addams would make you feel sickeningly normal compared to the weird characters in the film. Who can be more spooky and yet so composed and aloof than Wednesday, the little girl who looks like a walking Living Dead doll? And let’s not forget about the adorable and immensely useful ‘pet’ — Thing!
9. It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
-
This made in 1963 film about a mad, uproarious chase for a big loot left by a died stranger is a classic comedy that still brings much joy to those who are willing to spend 3-hour on this film. Despite the age of the movie, it has a mysteriously charm that keep you watching. See how greed turns otherwise good people into lawless gangsters that try to outrun each other in the quest for hidden treasure.
10. Zoolander
-
This movie takes an amusing look at the world of fashion through the eyes of an innocent male supermodel called Derek Zoolander. Expect much stereotyping of models in this movie (you’re aware that most funny movies are guilty of stereotyping right?), but hey, it’s meant to be a comedy. So, sit back and enjoy!
